Guardian Unlimited | Special reports | Schoolboy voted in as America's youngest mayor

Just the thing to reduce my political cynicism. An 18-year old won election as mayor of a Michigan city as a write-in candidate. He wasn't old enough at the time to get on the official ballot, so he sold $700 worth of toffee apples over the summer so he could fund his campaign after he turned 18. He won, in a recount, by 2 votes.
