Happy New Year everyone. Posting is likely to be down this month. Tons of work to do, but I am up to a few things that will be revealed in due time. Friday night we hit the Art Miami 2007 fair. As we are approaching the anniversary of our move to Miami we missed this fair last year. When I heard about this fair, I thought it very odd considering the art explosion that was Art Basel Miami Beach, just a mere month ago. However, since we really didn't see much of ABMB, we made a point of going to this fair. Held in the convention center, the above photo probably shows maybe a quarter of the space. We spent about 2 hours strolling about aimlessly and I'd say we enjoyed about a quarter of what we saw, which I think is pretty good. A lot of local galleries participated, several of which we haven't stumbled into yet, so hopefully we'll remember where to go in the future. Underwater Sculpture Gallery - Grenada

Steel and concrete sculptures that become artificial reef syestems off the coast of Grenada. Much care was taken to find a location where this sculpture garden would not only not harm the environment, but enhance it by luring people away from areas overused by water sports and creating artificial reef structures. The site details the process of creating and placing the different sculptures and has many images. I love the idea of diving around sculpture giving the viewer an even more three dimensional view than usual (particularly at this scale).

Looking back, it sure was a heck of a year for us, with selling the house, moving 900 miles, starting a new job, finding and starting another new job, making new friends, spending lots of time at the beach, snorkeling, indoor rock climbing, kayaking, bike riding, buying a new house and moving again. It's a good thing our hot tub is working now. We need a few good soaks to get ready for whatever 2007 brings.

The title says it all. After last night's free Peaches show on the beach, I didn't think it could get any better, but a free Supreme Beings of Liesure show in the Design District may really hit the spot after gallery hopping Saturday night.

We hit the show last night after fighting traffic more than usual and almost getting hit by a cop who pulled part way into a parking garage, then started to back up inexplicably. After I calmed down and found parking, we went to the We'll Make a Lover Out of You show, mentioned previously. It was phenomenal. The Colin Christian pieces were much larger scale than I realized from the web shots. The paintings were all hung on walls with really cool graphic design print looking pastel backgrounds to hold them together. Only a few pieces per artist, but absolutely worth the traffic trauma. Part of the reason we went there first was to pick up our reserved tickets for "Matthew Barney: No Restraint" a documentary about Barney's latest collaboration with wife Bjork. Unfortunately our tickets were not there. Not sure if we misunderstood or if the whole thing's going to be sketchy. Hopefully we'll get into the show Saturday.

After the WMALOOY show, we headed toward the beach and the Art Positions containers. Along the way we saw several art events spilling out of various hotel lobbies, passing a fantastic balloon costume/sculpture girl, and several video projections. There was also a truck driving around with video art projected from the inside to the outer sides of it. The Art Positions containers were, jam packed with hipsters, euros, and rich people and not much in the way of interesting art IMNSHO. The containers themselves are shipping containers placed near the beach to create a gallery hop without galleries. There was some performance art around the area and a bar/snack area in the middle. The container that stood out most to me was the only one to make a real effort to transform the space, by making some type of walls that curved and angled with built in viewing ports for small acrylic sculptures. Unfortunately they were having technical difficulties with some of the lighting in the ports and the unintended effect of their transformation was insulation and a lot of heat. We did enjoy the most posh port-o-let's ever with faux marble and topiaries.

We hit the beach early to rest our feet and get away from the crowd. Peaches and her krewe started from atop a lifeguard stand with toy lightsabers and masks marching to the stage. They must have done a good job sneaking up there, or went really early because we were sitting nearby for a half hour before the show started and there was no commotion to indicate their presence. It just looked like some fans had staked out some high ground early to see the show. The show was a tight 1 hour electro rock set. The crowd was a little wierd. I'm not sure if there were too many who didn't know Peaches, or there was too much space on the beach, or it was too early and people hadn't had enough time to drink up, but the energy wasn't what I'd expect. I think Peaches went to Shake Your Dicks Shake Your Tits a little too early in the set and the crowd just wasn't ready. We made our way pretty close and started to get into some good dancing, but not quite the 3am show in New Orleans of 2 years ago, where it felt like at any moment an orgy was about to erupt. She ended the show with some schtick about a naked guy swimming through a boring rich people's art party the night before and wanting to honor the surprize swimmer with a jump in the ocean. Peaches and the Herms raced off stage to the ocean and much of the crowd followed, but noone got naked and jumped in. Few got in past their knees. It was early, and I don't think you can get into the clubs with wet clothes.

We were good and headed straight home so we could work today and see more this weekend. All in all, a pretty damn fine Wednesday evening.

Friday Cocktail: Emerald Tablet Courtesy of U'Luvka Vodka

U'Luvka Vodka
U'Luvka has a beautiful and elegant flash-based website. Many of the recipes are quite unique, and suggestions for infusions such as saffron or quince. They also have a section of vodcasts, short videos of cocktails being created. Here's a recipe that I'd never think of on my own:

Emerald Tablet
100 ml U'Luvka Vodka (straight from the freezer)
15ml Green Chartreuse
2 springs Fresh Rosemary

In a brandy balloon (I'm guessing snifter) warm the Chartreuse over a flame. Then add one sprig of rosemary and ignite. Swirl the glass to infuse a smoky rosemary flavour. Extinguish and then strain into a frozen martini glass. Pour over the frozen U'Luvka and stir using a garnish of a spear of fresh rosemary.

Sounds fantastic.

In a follow-up to my previous post about the Dead Schembechlers, the band was put in a very awkward situation when former Michigan coach Bo Schembechler passed away the day before the game. The band's site is currently down due to the amazing amount of publicity they had generated prior to the enormous game Saturday. However, their myspace page is up. It's nice to see the unfortunately named band handled the situation with class.

The group played the largest Hate Michigan Rally in history on November 17th, selling out the Newport Music Hall with over 1500 people attending. It was an emotionally charged evening with the shocking news of the death of the band's namesake, Bo Schembechler, coming earlier in the day. The band announced at a press conference prior to the show that they would drop the current band name out of respect to Bo and the Schembechler family if they continued in the future. They also announced all band profits from the show inluding those of Watershed and B.A. Baracus would be donated to a charity of the Schembechler family's choosing. The show was the most incredible in their history as the crowd continually cheered for Bo, the band led a final cheer for him aand dedicated the entire event to "the most valiant foe OSU has ever faced."

Neat free site that allows you to organize and share your collections. It's got all the social networking and rss feed capabilities we're coming to expect from this type of thing. I'm posting this because I might use it to catalog my vintage barware collection.

Posting has been anemic lately I know. Fall is the busiest time of the year for my work, and we closed on the house 3 weeks ago, so we've been moving non-stop. We've painted the complete interior, with just a few doors and trim work to finish. Things are generally put away, and the largest artwork has been placed. The biggest tasks left are office and bar organization, and then the yardwork. We're very happy with the new diggs.

Speaking of the lack of recent posts, is anyone interested in contributing. It's easy, really doesn't take much time if you're already surfing anyway. Let me know via email at experiment33@gmail.com and I'll fill you in on the details.

America's Drunkest Cities - Forbes.com
Forbes magazine took the top 35 metro areas in the US and rated them on 5 alcohol related categories:

1. State Laws 9 point rating scale (using a variety of sources) low scores are more loose with their liquor laws.
2. Number of Drinkers (1 drink in last 30 days - self report)
3. Heavy Drinkers (2drinks/day for men and1drink/day for women)
4. Binge Drinking (more than 5 drinks on one occasion - not clear about the time frame)
5. Alcoholism (number of AA meetings as a proportion of population)

The top of the list is mostly cold-weather midwestern cities, with the exception of Boston at 4 and Austin at 5. I seem to be making my way down the list to less drunk cities. Here are the cities I have some connection with:

3. Columbus, OH - #2 in heavy drinkers, 5 in binge, and 6 alcoholism. #17 in drinkers, and relatively strong laws 7 (out of 9) Maybe some OSU influence here.
7. Cleveland, OH - #2 in alcoholism, 7 in drinkers, 10 in heavy, and 19 in binge
16. Cincinnati, OH - middle of the road score for middle of the road city
24. New Orleans - quite a surprize, main surveys were conducted in 2004, so the data should match the former New Orleans, ranked 33rd in number of drinkers, but rated a 4 in liquor laws - would probably be a 1 if they took into account how the laws are actually enforced
33. Miami - maybe a combo of the health nuts and old people at work on this low rating.

I'm still here

When you move across country for a job, it should come as no surprise to find it cutting into your blogging time. Just wanted to quickly check in and let you know I'll be back to my usual schedule soon. I've got my first big deadline on Monday and I've really been working hard to make it. A few random things kicking around in my head:

Clerks II was hillarious! The wheels kind of fall off as they resolve the conflicts of the movie, but plot is not what I'm looking for in a Clerks movie. Beware of Pillow Pants!

Who wants to be a Superhero was a lot better than I ever expected. Didn't turn it on until about half way through and was really dissapppointed to see the cast was chosen and they were moving into their "secret lair." I only wanted to see the audition part, where people dressed as "underwear perverts" as boingboing likes to call them try to convince Stan Lee they should be on the show. They were already into the standard reality show setup of challenge then elimination, but the challenge was great. They tell the superheros the challenge is about changing into their costumes discreetly and getting to a place quickly. The real challenge is to notice a young girl who needs help along the way and to do anything for her. Only three out of thirteen superheros notice the little girl, but the best is that two of the three who notice do so because they run slow (one because she's a big girl, she goes by Fat Momma, and the other because her costume has very high heels). The other one who notices probably only does so because he's embraced the cheese of the comic book superhero and stops and poses every so often. As luck would have it he stops to pose within earshot of the girl. I loved watching the superheros who missed the girl find out what the real challenge was. Stan Lee is pretty amusing too in his over the top interactions with the heros. Don't know if they can keep it up, but I'll be watching again.

The show on after it has a lot of potential too. I'll have to look it up though cause the name is long and ridiculous, but it's some kind of sci-fi horror spoof with a bad 80s Dr. Who hospital twist. It conflicts with It's Always Sunny in Philladelphia though so hopefully I'll catch it another time.

Diggin the new peaches album and a recent release by the Rakes.

I'm finding it a little bizzare to hear about the heat wave, but live about as far south as I can go and thinking the weather's been great, not much different than Baton Rouge except with an ocean breeze.

Speaking of living in Miami, another new thing for me is living in a place with such a large Jewish community. Today in the paper there was a full-page add urging Jewish men to wear a leather box strapped to their arm in support of Israel. I'll be watching to see if that happens much.

Also been on a health/active lifestyle kick lately that shows no signs of slowing. We're both practically addicted to indoor rock climbing, going 2 or 3 times a week for over a month now, and slowly working our way up in difficulty level. Also swimming and we went kayaking once which was really great. I want to eventually buy some kayaks and use them to paddle out to snorkeling locations. This area is the worlds beach dive capital meaning you can find great snorkeling/scuba diving from the beach without a boat.

Well that was more than I intended and I left a lot out. Not sure if there will be a Friday cocktail or not. Probably depends on how my writing goes today. If I don't get to one, I suggest a crisp gin and tonic as a classic that shoudl hit the spot this warm evening.

Independence Day Fireworks 2006

We got to be up close and personal for the fireworks last night.

These works were all lit by hand using flares.

We were about 100 yards away.

Our camera doesn't have a wide-angle lens so lots of the pictures only capture part of the explosion.

But I think they turned out great.

My Album Covers

After my recent post of Dennis Catron's collection of sexy lp cover art, I realized we had a few ourselves and a few not so sexy, but eminently worth sharing. Since space is limited in our tiny apartment, I'm going to start taking the camera with us to the thrift store for those covers that I want to remember, but albums I don't necessarily want to hear. The quality of the photo's not as good, but not too bad either. BTW, Dennis has added a some new covers to his collection.

Redesign

For some reason I got geeked up about fixing the February redesign, and went overboard. I hope you like some of the new features. The new left sidebar contains most of the fun stuff. Top left are my pictures (had been on the right. The next section of del.icio.us cocktail recipes came about because I recently subscribed to a bunch of cocktail blogs (will add those shortly) and realized that I didn't have something to say about all the recipes I'd like to share and/or remember for myself, so I found a way to just tag pages/posts in my del.icio.us that would then automatically add them to the sidebar. I'll still highlight recipes when I have something to add, or one's I make up myself, or get from books, in the main content area, but there should always be a dozen or so recipes to try in the left column. Below that is my Google calendar, which I'm using to try to track all the arts and cultural events I'd like to attend (no guarantee I'll go to any). Google calendar doesn't let me change the color yet. Then we've got the links (I'll have to add the cocktail blogs soon, but this was plenty of work for now). Over on the right I've added pictures from other people that I find amusing. If you have a flickr account and want one of your pictures to show up there, try tagging it with e33 and see if it works. There's a new subscribe button that takes you to a page to quickly add Experiment33 to many common rss readers. Then the Zoomclouds that I added a few months ago and some searching and stats stuff.

Hopefully, the left and right columns stay fixed in their position and width and the middle column will adjust itself to fit your window. You should also be able to finally see my whole banner that I made a while ago, but didn't show correctly. I've only tested in firefox and internet explorer on a pc, so any mac users or other browser folks please let me know if it doesn't look right. I am having a couple of problems that I know of, that I'll be looking into. In firefox the background color sometimes shows corectly in a dark burgundy color, but usually is white. In internet explorer the columns don't always size correctly. That's what I'm aware of.

Please comment and let me know if there's anything else not working, or that you think I should add.

Wrap up of this Monday's Mixology Monday blog-a-thon, with the subject being apertifs I did not participate. Reading the descriptions and seeing the pictures makes me want to try some. I won't be trying the one developed at the Art of the Drink which features Unicum (the blogger of Art of the Drink won't be making it again either), but it does remind me of a story.

I didn't start drinking until I was 20, on a trip to Europe. I've always disliked beer, so I just didn't bother. While in Europe, we (LuRu and I) made a picinic one day in France and bought some wine, just because we thought we should. It was pretty good and certainly made us feel tres chic. Forward in the trip a few weeks and we find our selves in Budapest. We arrive early Sunday morning and we just wanted to spend the day on our way to either Prauge or Vienna (can't recall the exact order). We only stopped because it had been a long ride from Rome. We exchange $50 for the day (this was 1992) and wandered throughout the city. Well, Budapest was cheap, and lots of things were closed on Sunday, so we found ourselves with a ton (to us at the time) of money at the train station, where we could eat McDonald's food, get tattoos, or buy liquor. Even the McDonald's didn't put a dent in our funds. We bought 2 or 3 bottles of wine, a bottle of champagne, and a bottle of Unicum, because of the bottle. We pile into the midnight train and it's packed. After hunting through several cars, we luck into the last 2 seats in a 6 seat compartment. Our traveling companions happen to be a pair from England and a pair from Scotland, so some form of english all around! The 2 pair had the same issues with excess cash to burn and had spent similarly. The train was hot and uncomfortable, but the companionship was excellent and bottles were opened and passed freely. Eventually we squeezed in 2 Canadians who had great stories of sleeping in a train station in war torn Yugoslavia. As bottles were drained we finally had to try the Unicum. No one tried it more than once. I only recall it being nasty. The Art of the Drink describes it as making Yeagermeister look like a girls drink, so I figure that's about right. We left the bottle under the seat and forgot about it. I hope it didn't cause a bomb scare.
