Fascinating story of a black girl born to two white parents in South Africa in the late 50s. A very rare occurrence, but aparently genetically possible. At the age of 9 she was expelled from her school because her designation changed from white to "coloured" and she was not allowed to live with ehr parents except as a servant. Supreme court battles were fought and her designation changed. Then she left home at the age of 15 and was disowned by her parents for eloping with a black man.

What a surprise that I rock arder than my favorite places. I knew I would rock harder than Bush, but I was surprised that Cheney rocked harder than bush, so I tried entering their whole names. Apparently they suck equally. Bush on it's own is lower, could it be due to pr0n sites being anti a different kind of bush?

If I'd found this on myspace itself I'd have thought it was a joke. But it's for real, the Miami-Dade police department has started a myspace profile. I find it somewhat amusing that they used pimp-my-profile. com to make their page virtually unreadable. Something odd about seeing In God We Trust followed immediately by www.pimp-my-profile.com. There's a kernel of a good idea here, to give parents the option of allowing their kids to have myspace profile if they add the police department (the page is specifially monitored by the sexual crimes bureau). However, it seems like it's likely to give parents a false sense of security. Friends can't see private messages and instant messages and who knows how thoroughly the pd will screen comments and bulletins over time. Who will be the first to make the ironic Miami-Dade Police Department is in my Top 8 T-shirt?
After a hiatus coinciding with our move to Miami, the cocktail of the week returns and I'm going to do it the way I had always wanted to. I will make and photograph the cocktail each week. betterPropaganda - Free MP3s and music videos.
Earlier this week I had the pleasure of bumping into a long lost friend, betterPropaganda. When I got my first computer with high speed internet connection I immediately delved into the world of online music, generally being frustrated with shady legalities and bad music. At some point I found betterPropaganda and I was set, except after a while it seemed that they weren't adding new music and the site wasn't running as good as it should, so I moved on. Well, I'm pleased to say that betterPropaganda is now my new/old favorite spot for new tunes. It's got the best mix of indie, electronica, and hip-hop, but if you prefer you can filter out any of those genres. They highlight 15 recomended tunes in the right column and all you have to do is click stream and away it goes. If you like a song you can download it free and legally. Based on their recomendation, I'll be downloading the New Young Pony Club tonight (great party music, check their myspace page for a few more tunes). Below the recommendations are the 10 most recent additions to the site, also streamable. If that's not enough they have a streaming radio link that's been perfect for listening while at work.
When you want to dig deeper into a band, they have pages for each band with bio stuff and list of all songs available on bP. Again you can stream them. I have run into one small problem, when I stream one artist's songs, then go to another artist's page and try to stream the new artist's songs I get the original stream. Hopefully that won't last forever. Also nice, while on the artists page there is a list of similar artists, again all streamable. So, if you're in a Brazillian Girls mood, but don't want to listen to only Brazillian Girls, click the stream similar link and get Slow Train Soul, Danger Mouse & Zero 7, Bjork, Royksopp, Nouvelle Vague, and others. Great for finding new music.
If that wasn't enough you can also rate artists and get more personalized recommendations. I haven't even begun to dig into the reviews, interviews, and podcasts. Now, some of the features require signing up, but it's a free login and they don't ask much. I actually had an old login that I forgot about, so I can't recall what they ask. They also send newsletters if you opt in.
Sorry soma.fm, last.fm, accuradio, and kcrw, I won't be spending much time with you in the near future.

Nice stories and close-up pictures of all 40 super bowl rings. Quite a progression of bling. Is anyone still saying bling? Many rings have been lost or stolen over the years, and many returned. They take ring measurments soon after the superbowl and most linemen's hands are still swolen from the game/season so when they get their rings they are impossibly large. The largest ever made went to William "the refridgerator" Perry from Super Bowl XX. It's large enough to pass a half dollar through.

my del.icio.us is hanging up, so I'm posting this here so I don't lose it. It's from boingboing and you probably already read them so I don't repost much from them. Anyway, this stuff looks awesome for video art. It's a powder that when mixed with water turns it into a thick colored gel, marketed as a way to make bathtime fun for kids. Several colors, reasonable price, commercial on the site makes it look pretty easy to use and turn back into water with salt. Not supposed to stain, but don't eat it or get it in your eyes.

Upload any list of email addresses, lots of formats accepted, and see if you have any friends with accounts. Very quick and easy. YesButNoButYes: Fictional Sitcom Employers For Which I'd Love To Work
The fine Aquaman over at YesButNoButYes wrote a thought provoking (in a juvenile way) post about what sitcom employers and jobs he'd like to have. Got me to thinking about my own list.
1. Bartender - Regal Beagle - Three's Company
I'll start with one that Aquaman also wants, but he really nailed it. Lot's of sitcoms have bars, but this would definitely be the best, never too busy, good looking clientele, etc. I'd love hearing Larry and Jack mack on the ladies. I definitely would not want to tend bar at Cheers. Sam gets dibs on all the best looking women and everyone just drinks beer except that prick Frasier. I'm torn about the bar in It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia, might be too much fighting, plus the tips would be terrible.
2. Handyman - Facts of Life
You know a nice manly influence around the house. Come to think of it, I don't really remember the show, just that I had a massive crush on Jo, and occasionally Tootie and Blair.
3. Assistant to Jethro - Beverly Hillbilies
Would have been the first member of his entourage, helping him make all his schemes reality.
4. DJ - WKRP in Cincinnati
That show could have used a punk rock dj, right after Johnny Fever's show.
5. Assistant Coach - Coach/First and Ten
Recently saw the complete First and Ten DVDs at a gas station for $10. Why didn't I pull the trigger? I don't remember the coaches much, just the players, so I'll reserve judgment. I could definitely coach with Craig T., Jerry, and Dauber.

In response to recent murders in Jacksonville the city sponsored a "day of faith" rally. An aethiest group brought a lawsuit based on the use of government funds for a religious use. "Edward Kagin, American Atheists' lead attorney, called the settlement a victory for the organization and for all people concerned about the erosion of church-state separation." Well, I'm very concerned about the erosion of church-state separation, but I don't see how this helps in the least. Yes, the city could have avoided this whole thing by calling it a day of peace and having the exact same programming, but all this does is set up the aethists for ridicule. I'll be watching for a mention on the daily show. Why haven't aethists tackled the idiocy of not allowing gay marriage? That seems like a much more important issue of separation of church and state to me.
That reminds me, back when we were volunteering at the shelter, post Katrina, there were several groups of volunteers from various religious organizations that wore matching t-shirts to identify themselves (I only specifically recall the yellow-shirted scientologists, but there were other groups as well). We joked we should make t-s that said "Aethiests are here to help" on the front and "because obviously, there is no God" on the back.

Guy loses 9lbs over 6 weeks by playing nintendo Wii Sports 30 minutes a day, every day. The Next Few Hours � Blog Archive � Art Miami 2007
Happy New Year everyone. Posting is likely to be down this month. Tons of work to do, but I am up to a few things that will be revealed in due time. Friday night we hit the Art Miami 2007 fair. As we are approaching the anniversary of our move to Miami we missed this fair last year. When I heard about this fair, I thought it very odd considering the art explosion that was Art Basel Miami Beach, just a mere month ago. However, since we really didn't see much of ABMB, we made a point of going to this fair. Held in the convention center, the above photo probably shows maybe a quarter of the space. We spent about 2 hours strolling about aimlessly and I'd say we enjoyed about a quarter of what we saw, which I think is pretty good. A lot of local galleries participated, several of which we haven't stumbled into yet, so hopefully we'll remember where to go in the future. The link above gives a little more context and more photos of the work (also a funny juxtaposition photo from the gift expo in the next hall).
Underwater Sculpture Gallery - Grenada
Steel and concrete sculptures that become artificial reef syestems off the coast of Grenada. Much care was taken to find a location where this sculpture garden would not only not harm the environment, but enhance it by luring people away from areas overused by water sports and creating artificial reef structures. The site details the process of creating and placing the different sculptures and has many images. I love the idea of diving around sculpture giving the viewer an even more three dimensional view than usual (particularly at this scale).

Looking back, it sure was a heck of a year for us, with selling the house, moving 900 miles, starting a new job, finding and starting another new job, making new friends, spending lots of time at the beach, snorkeling, indoor rock climbing, kayaking, bike riding, buying a new house and moving again. It's a good thing our hot tub is working now. We need a few good soaks to get ready for whatever 2007 brings.

Category 305 - A Shirt that Will Live in Infamy
In an unfortunate coincidence at the balloon parade during Art Basel, apparently the balloon wranglers were wearing matching white t-shirts with a large red circle in the center, very similar to the Japanese flag. The title says it all. After last night's free Peaches show on the beach, I didn't think it could get any better, but a free Supreme Beings of Liesure show in the Design District may really hit the spot after gallery hopping Saturday night.
We hit the show last night after fighting traffic more than usual and almost getting hit by a cop who pulled part way into a parking garage, then started to back up inexplicably. After I calmed down and found parking, we went to the We'll Make a Lover Out of You show, mentioned previously. It was phenomenal. The Colin Christian pieces were much larger scale than I realized from the web shots. The paintings were all hung on walls with really cool graphic design print looking pastel backgrounds to hold them together. Only a few pieces per artist, but absolutely worth the traffic trauma. Part of the reason we went there first was to pick up our reserved tickets for "Matthew Barney: No Restraint" a documentary about Barney's latest collaboration with wife Bjork. Unfortunately our tickets were not there. Not sure if we misunderstood or if the whole thing's going to be sketchy. Hopefully we'll get into the show Saturday.
After the WMALOOY show, we headed toward the beach and the Art Positions containers. Along the way we saw several art events spilling out of various hotel lobbies, passing a fantastic balloon costume/sculpture girl, and several video projections. There was also a truck driving around with video art projected from the inside to the outer sides of it. The Art Positions containers were, jam packed with hipsters, euros, and rich people and not much in the way of interesting art IMNSHO. The containers themselves are shipping containers placed near the beach to create a gallery hop without galleries. There was some performance art around the area and a bar/snack area in the middle. The container that stood out most to me was the only one to make a real effort to transform the space, by making some type of walls that curved and angled with built in viewing ports for small acrylic sculptures. Unfortunately they were having technical difficulties with some of the lighting in the ports and the unintended effect of their transformation was insulation and a lot of heat. We did enjoy the most posh port-o-let's ever with faux marble and topiaries.
We hit the beach early to rest our feet and get away from the crowd. Peaches and her krewe started from atop a lifeguard stand with toy lightsabers and masks marching to the stage. They must have done a good job sneaking up there, or went really early because we were sitting nearby for a half hour before the show started and there was no commotion to indicate their presence. It just looked like some fans had staked out some high ground early to see the show. The show was a tight 1 hour electro rock set. The crowd was a little wierd. I'm not sure if there were too many who didn't know Peaches, or there was too much space on the beach, or it was too early and people hadn't had enough time to drink up, but the energy wasn't what I'd expect. I think Peaches went to Shake Your Dicks Shake Your Tits a little too early in the set and the crowd just wasn't ready. We made our way pretty close and started to get into some good dancing, but not quite the 3am show in New Orleans of 2 years ago, where it felt like at any moment an orgy was about to erupt. She ended the show with some schtick about a naked guy swimming through a boring rich people's art party the night before and wanting to honor the surprize swimmer with a jump in the ocean. Peaches and the Herms raced off stage to the ocean and much of the crowd followed, but noone got naked and jumped in. Few got in past their knees. It was early, and I don't think you can get into the clubs with wet clothes.
We were good and headed straight home so we could work today and see more this weekend. All in all, a pretty damn fine Wednesday evening.

Art Fag City: The AFC Miami Art Fair Calendar
Becoming overwhelmed by Art Basel Miami this week/end. This summary has potential to help us plan our visits.
U'Luvka Vodka
U'Luvka has a beautiful and elegant flash-based website. Many of the recipes are quite unique, and suggestions for infusions such as saffron or quince. They also have a section of vodcasts, short videos of cocktails being created. Here's a recipe that I'd never think of on my own:
Emerald Tablet
100 ml U'Luvka Vodka (straight from the freezer)
15ml Green Chartreuse
2 springs Fresh Rosemary
In a brandy balloon (I'm guessing snifter) warm the Chartreuse over a flame. Then add one sprig of rosemary and ignite. Swirl the glass to infuse a smoky rosemary flavour. Extinguish and then strain into a frozen martini glass. Pour over the frozen U'Luvka and stir using a garnish of a spear of fresh rosemary.
Sounds fantastic.

In a follow-up to my previous post about the Dead Schembechlers, the band was put in a very awkward situation when former Michigan coach Bo Schembechler passed away the day before the game. The band's site is currently down due to the amazing amount of publicity they had generated prior to the enormous game Saturday. However, their myspace page is up. It's nice to see the unfortunately named band handled the situation with class.
The group played the largest Hate Michigan Rally in history on November 17th, selling out the Newport Music Hall with over 1500 people attending. It was an emotionally charged evening with the shocking news of the death of the band's namesake, Bo Schembechler, coming earlier in the day. The band announced at a press conference prior to the show that they would drop the current band name out of respect to Bo and the Schembechler family if they continued in the future. They also announced all band profits from the show inluding those of Watershed and B.A. Baracus would be donated to a charity of the Schembechler family's choosing. The show was the most incredible in their history as the crowd continually cheered for Bo, the band led a final cheer for him aand dedicated the entire event to "the most valiant foe OSU has ever faced."
1950: Great Thanksgiving Storm
Check out this unbelieveable video of the Great Thanksgiving snowstorm of 1950. The game went on as scheduled, despite 5 degree temperatures, 40 mph winds, and snow depths of 20 inches. Unfortunately OSU lost by a score of 9-3. Michigan only gained 27 yards total, and no first downs.
