Friday Cocktail - Black Apple Martini and Flirtini

2 for 1 this week. First, the Black Apple Martini via Cocktail Times:

  • 2oz Phillips Union Whiskey
  • 1oz Apple Schnapps
  • 1oz Cranberry juice

Shake with ice and strain into a chilled martini glass. Phillips Union Whiskey is a new blend of Kentucky Bourbon and Canadian Whiskey. It also comes in cherry and vanilla flavors. The cherry should be good in a Manhattan, though I don't know if I'll ever run into this stuff around here. I'll probably just substitute bourbon, or blend my own without flavors.

I'm adding the Flirtini because I've got a bottle of champagne in the fridge and this sounds tasty:
  • 2 pieces fresh pineapple
  • 1/2oz Cointreau or Triple Sec
  • 1/2oz Vodka
  • 1oz Pineaple Juice
  • Champagne

Muddle pineapple and Cointreau in a mixing glass. Add ice, vodka, and pineapple juice. Shake, and strain into a chilled cocktail glass. Top with champagne.

Blending cheap burbon with Canadian whiskey is a family tradition. That's how manhattans are always made with my relatives. If fact, when I would sneak some of my Dad's liquor as a teenager I had to remember to pour out an equal amount of vermouth so he wouldn't be suspicious; all 3 bottles would always contain equal amounts.

I don't know if I'll be buying any "premixed" soon. But my "economanhattan" uses Jim Beam Rye, a midpriced Canadian, and M&R sweet vermouth. The Rye brings the flavor, the canadian takes the edge off, and the M&R vermouth is acceptable.
